Lwil maskriti (castor oil), explained
Haitian Black Castor Oil FAQs
What is Haitian black castor oil?
Haitian black castor oil, or lwil maskriti (castor oil), comes from castor seeds that are roasted, ground and slowly cooked by hand in Haiti, the way it has been made for generations. Roasting gives the oil its deep color and rich, earthy scent. Ours is screen-filtered and never refined, so nothing is stripped out.
Is black castor oil good for hair growth?
Black castor oil is about 90% ricinoleic acid, with omegas 3, 6 and 9 and vitamin E. It conditions the scalp and coats each strand, which helps cut down on breakage so your hair can hold on to its length. Our Haitian Black Castor Oil is clinically tested. In our consumer perception study, 95% of people said they saw faster hair growth and 92% said their hair felt stronger and shinier.*
What is the difference between black castor oil and regular castor oil?
It comes down to how it is made. Regular castor oil is pressed from raw seeds, so it is pale yellow or clear, and clear versions are often refined. Black castor oil is made from roasted seeds, which gives it a darker color, a thicker feel and the ash that customers love it for.
How do I use black castor oil for thinning hair or edges?
Part your hair into sections and add a few drops along the scalp, edges or thin spots. Massage for two to three minutes, two to three times a week. For extra moisture, leave it on overnight under a satin bonnet, or use it as a pre-shampoo treatment before wash day.
Which Haitian Black Castor Oil should I choose?
Original is unscented and works for every hair type, including thinning areas. Rosemary Peppermint adds a cooling tingle you can feel. Mango Papaya & Coconut is for dry hair that needs moisture and shine. Light is a thinner oil for fine hair and daily use on skin. Not sure? The Growth Trio lets you try our three best sellers.
Can I use it on my brows, lashes and beard?
Yes. Use a clean spoolie or fingertip to apply a small amount to brows, lashes or beard at night. Keep it out of your eyes. Our Brow, Beard & Lash Treatment comes in a small bottle made for exactly this.
Is it right for my hair type?
Haitian Black Castor Oil is for everyone: coily, curly, wavy, straight, locs, men and women. If your hair is fine or gets oily fast, use less, focus on the scalp, or apply it before you wash so it does not weigh your hair down.
How long until I see results?
Hair grows slowly, so consistency matters more than quantity. Use it two to three times a week for 90 days, and take a photo on day one so you can compare.
Is it 100% natural and safe?
Yes. Our castor oils are 100% natural, with no sulfates, parabens or synthetic fillers. As with any new product, do a patch test on your inner arm first and stop if you notice irritation.
Where is it made?
Our castor seeds are grown and processed in Haiti. Every bottle supports jobs for women and farmers in Haiti.
